More about binturongs...

Binturongs are also known as a bearcats, although they are not related to either bears or cats! Instead, they are related to civets and fossas.

They are an arboreal, tree dwelling, species from South and Southeast Asia.

Binturongs have scent glands under their tail which they use to mark out branches and foliage in their territory.

Their tail is very thick and muscular at the base, with the last third of it prehensile which means it can be used like an extra hand when climbing around in the treetops. A leathery patch at the tip helps their tail grip to the branches as they climb along.

In the wild, they eat a varied diet which can include carrion, eggs, plant shoots and leaves, small invertebrates, fish, birds, small mammals, and fruits. In captivity, our Binturongs enjoy chicken breast, boiled eggs and fruit and some days will feast on a chicken or quail carcass.

Binturongs are classed as vulnerable in the wild and the threats include habitat loss, hunting for fur, meat, traditional medicines and capture for the pet trade.
