Our younger visitors are invited to bring their fa

Our younger visitors are invited to bring their favourite cuddly toy and join us at our under-fives teddy bears’ picnic.

Taking place in the castle courtyard over two days in June – Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27, the event will include children’s entertainment, minibeast encounters, crafts and face painting.

There’ll also be the chance to meet some of DZC’s costumed mascots and build sandcastles on ‘Ow Bin Ya’ Sands’ – our 80-tonne giant sandpit, which can be found opposite our meerkat enclosure
Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £7.50 for children aged between two and five and zoo admission is included, allowing you to also visit the animals across the 40-acre site.

And we’ve been able to officially confirm our lively four-month-old is a boy!

Just days after World Penguin Day we can announce

Just days after World Penguin Day we can announce keepers have named Elliot our Humboldt penguin as our animal of the month!

Nominating Elliot, the bird team said: “Elliot topped the bill because he always puts a smile on our faces.

We often think, "waddle we do without him?"

There were a few candidates on the bird section to nominate, so we did 'flipper' coin, but in the end, it was black and white who would win!

We heart tapirs here at DZC!

This World Tapir Day we’re helping raise awareness about the threats Brazilian tapirs, like Meena and Chico, face in their native forests across Northern and Central South America, including habitat destruction for roads and farming and being hunted for meat.

If you’re visiting us today, make sure to head to our paddock where you can spot our 21-year-old couple and learn more about their fascinating species.

Here at DZC, we’re proud to donate towards the ongoing work of The Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative. Led by Brazilian conservationist Dr Patrícia Medici, The Lowland Tapir Conservation Initiative is a long-term research effort, which aims to have conservation and research programmes running in all four biomes where tapirs are found. Their work is integral to protecting the species and their funding primarily comes from zoos across the world.

And if you love tapirs as much as we do, did you know as well as being able to adopt our pair, you can also meet them during a tapir experience.

Calling all local residents! Can you help us docu

Calling all local residents!

Can you help us document nature on our doorstep, as we take part in the global City Nature Challenge!

Today is the first of the four-day challenge, where cities across the world compete to see how many native species they can spot, including animals, insects, birds and plants.

Here at DZC we’re joining the worldwide challenge as part of Birmingham and Black Country, which last year came first in the UK and seventh in Europe and we’re hoping as many of you as possible will join us again this year as our regions once again aim for the top spot.

It’s really easy and fun to take part, but is vital in generating useful information to help experts monitor the state of wildlife in our local areas, as well as targeting nature conservation activities to better protect wildlife.

All you need to do is between today and Monday (April 26 – 29) take photographs of any native wildlife you see on your travels and upload it to the iNaturalist app on your mobile phone, with its location.

Your entry will be recorded and reviewed by a specialist, who will confirm its correct identity.
